Commandment #3: Watch Your Mouth! (do not use the LORD’s name in vain)
Exodus 20:7 & Matthew 12:34
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. – Exodus 20:7 (ESV)
A couple of different angels
- Profanity
- Speaking of God in untruthful ways – unsubstantial, unreal, or worthless.
The heart muscle moves the mouth muscles.
Jesus said “You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil?
For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” – Matthew 12:34 (ESV).
Application
Watch your mouth
- By what you allow into your mind (which leads to your heart)
- By what you believe from your heart
- By what you let out of your mouth
- Finally by recognizing your only hope – Jesus
Remember
We all are living in brokenness apart from God.
The brokenness we experience is not God’s Perfect Design.
But Jesus came into our broken world, died for our sin, and rose from the grave.
By turning to Jesus and following Him, we are restored to God’s Perfect Design!
