Idol of Sex

Title: The Idol of Sex

Main Verse: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Key Thought:  The debate among the culture and the church when it comes to sex has much to do with freedom of choice. The cultural standard for sexual expression is as follows; if I want to do something and I am not hurting anyone, then I should be free to do it. Yet, Paul invites the church to a higher standard. He does so knowing that some of the members are frequenting temples with prostitutes (so they are literally worshiping in and through a sexual act). Paul rebukes this sin and challenges the members of the church to view sex as a spiritual reality and not just a physical one. Following his guidance will help us tear down the idol sex.

Supporting Points:

Introduction: Committed Christians can struggle with sexual sin. This must be addressed in a gospel centered, Christ-honoring way. 1 Cor 6 helps us with this.

  1. Paul challenges the current mindset about personal freedom (6:12-13)

I am free to do what I want

I have a desire to do something.

I should not be limited under any circumstances.

For desires must have ways of being satisfied (food – stomach)

This is true if sex is only physical.

But few people believe that sex is just body parts touching.

2. Paul brings a series of new insights.

Your body is not just for sex.

But it is for the Lord (and the Lord is for your body)

God will raise us up into an eternal reality.

Your bodies are members of Christ (thus your bodies are spiritual)

3. How do we tear down the idol of sexuality

RUN! (don’t linger, wander, or try to fight with sexual temptation)

See your body (and your sexual activities) as spiritual realities!

Your body is bought and paid for by Christ.

Application:

How do I begin to tear down the Idol of sex?

  • Honor God with your body.
  • Honor God by confessing your sin and receiving his grace.
