The One True King, The Suffering King

Main Verse: (Isaiah 53:1-12)

Key Thought: Around 700 years before the New Testament was written, the prophet Isaiah wrote that a servant would somehow restore all that had been lost. This humble person would go through excruciating pain, but this pain would bring about healing for many (Isaiah 53:1-6). Seven centuries later, Jesus did what no other human has ever done; fulfill this prediction. Jesus fully and finally matches the prophet’s description. But this fulfilled prophecy is more than some historical curiosity. This ancient story tells what incredible depths God will go to prove his love for us. And we also learn how we can have a right relationship with God.

Key Question

For whom would you suffer?

The amount of the suffering you would endure for a person is a strong indicator of the amount of love you have for that person.

The God Who suffers

1. Jesus suffered in our place (Isaiah 53:4)

2. Jesus bore the punishment for our sins and even the sin itself (Isaiah 53:5, 11, 12)

3. Jesus intercedes on our behalf (Isaiah 53:12)

– We pray to Jesus

– Jesus prays for us

– Because he understands us (Hebrews 2:17, 18; 4:15)

Application:

What is your prayer to Jesus?

Leave it with him.
